Wood Roofing, Cedar Shakes & Shingles

Picture
In shake application, spaced sheathing is usually 1" x 6" boards spaced on centers equal to the weather exposure at which the shakes are to be laid - but never more than 7½" for 18" shakes and 10" for 24" shakes on roof installations.

When 1" x 4" spaced sheathing is installed at 10" on center, additional 1" x 4" boards must be installed between the sheathing boards. A solid deck is recommended in areas where wind-driven snow is encountered.

Roofing felt interlay between the shake courses is required - whether the sheathing is spaced or solid. The felt interlay acts as a baffle that prevents wind-driven snow or other foreign material from entering the attic cavity during extreme weather conditions. The interlays also increase the roof's insulation value.

Special care should be taken when installing the felt interlays over spaced sheathing. This will ensure that an effective baffle is formed (Figure 3). The felt should be applied over the top portion of the shakes and extend on to the spaced sheathing. Position the bottom edge of the felt at a distance above the butt equal to twice the weather exposure.

To be an effective baffle, the top of the felt must rest on the sheathing. The shakes should be placed so that the nails are driven through the upper portion of the sheathing board with the top of the roofing felt attached to the lower portion.

Important notice from The Red Cedar Shake & Shingle Bureau

The British Columbia Building Code requires that western red cedar shingles and shakes
conform to CSA-0118.1. This standard describes two grades of shakes for roofing, namely
Premium Grade (100% edge grain) and No.1 (Blue Label) Grade (up to 20% flat grain). The Code allows the use of shakes conforming to either one of these grades but only permits the installation of 100% edge grade material on the roof, this includes hip and ridge units and taper sawn roof shakes laid as shakes.

Cedar shingles and shakes are bundled and labeled to grade at the mill. Mills that manufacture to the CSA standard are audited by independent testing authorities who have been accredited to grade cedar shakes and shingles by the Standards Council of Canada. CSA-0118.1 requires each bundle of shingles or shakes to be distinctly marked to identify the size, grade of product, the name of the manufacturer or their agent and a statement that the product meets the requirements of the standard.

Unfortunately unlabelled, mislabeled and noncomplying materials continue to appear on job sites. Properly certified bundles broken open on site may lose their labels or, worse,
nonconforming bundles may be fraudulently mislabeled.

Cedar shakes and shingles that do not meet the grading standard can dramatically reduce the usable life expectancy of a roof.

Installation practices which do not reflect the requirements of the British Columbia Building Code can lead to premature roof failure and unexpected replacement costs.

Rite-Way Roofing always uses top quality # 1 grade premium cedar shakes and shingles for our wood roof installations.

Rite-Way Roofing has the highest standard of installation practices and always delivers a top quality wood roof to our clients.
